Vienna horns are single horns in F - they lack a Bb trigger valve. Also, they do not have rotary valves - they have a different valve system called a pumpenvalve. All of the major Austrian orchestras use Vienna horns and are quite proud of its distinctive sound. Roland Berger, featured in this video, was one of the greats.

Thanks for the recommendations. My following them up forthwith is, alas, limited only by the inelasticity of my wallet!

Have you heard Furtwangler, Klemperer, Walter, and Ormandy? They all get the opening bars "right," and the playing on those recordings is full of forward momentum. Yes, the Vienna Phiulharmonic plays gloriously for Karl Bohm.

Your nasty comment is not very helpful. Grow up and tell me another opinion; how easy it is to hurl insults without giving any reason. I am a lifelong professional musician, conductor, pianist, and voice coach whose opinions are sought after and I feel ridiculous even responding to such an offensive person as yourself. I AM curious to know your opinion, however. Do you even know the difference between ALLA BREVE, TWO and FOUR, and how conducting those make for a completely different result?
